In D’Nealian cursive, start at the top line. Then, form a small loop at the top to the left. Next, curve downward to the baseline with a stroke. Last, Lift the pen after completing the letter “J” as it stands independently.
How to Write Lowercase Letter j in Cursive
Cursive letter formation for lowercase letter j is begins at the base as does the letter formation for uppercase letter j. D’Nealian has a lead in, so you will start your pencil on the baseline, curving upwards towards the midline. Once you reach the midline, return back down straight until you go just beyond the baseline. At the bottom of the baseline begin to curve back up and to the baseline, then you will connect your next letter to this tail at the baseline.

When instructing a student on how to write a capital “J” in D’Nealian cursive and connect it to another letter, you might guide them in the following steps:
- Write the capital cursive J:
- Start at the top line.
- Form a small loop at the top-left.
- Curve downward to the baseline with a stroke.
- Stop the stroke at the baseline.
- To connect to the next letter:
